He has a multifaceted background encompassing market analysis, trading strategies/portfolio management and business development/relationship management in diverse environments. Fred holds a BS degree in Business Administration (with a minor in Economics) from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and an MA degree from The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in Latin American Studies encompassing an interdisciplinary curriculum of International Business, History, and Sociology. He is also a technical analyst for Dow Jones Newswires and the senior market analyst with TraderPlanet.com. Jim is also a consultant with the highly respected "Pro Farmer" agricultural advisory service. Jim was also the head equities analyst at CapitalistEdge.com. He was a financial journalist with the FWN newswire service for many years, including stints as a reporter on the rough-and-tumble commodity futures trading floors in Chicago and New York. As a journalist, he has covered every futures market traded in the U.S., at one time or another. It didn’t take Jim long to realize the successful traders and analysts in every market—be it pork bellies, Treasury bonds or stock index futures—had a common thread among them: nearly all relied on technical analysis to give them an edge. Not long after he began his career in financial/commodity market journalism, Jim began studying technical analysis. He found it fascinating. By studying chart patterns and other technical indicators, Jim realized the playing field could be leveled between the “professional insiders” in the markets, and traders/analysts like himself. It didn't take Jim long to realize the successful traders and analysts in every market—be it pork bellies, Treasury bonds or stock index futures—had a common thread among them: nearly all relied on technical analysis to give them an edge. Not long after he began his career in financial/commodity market journalism, Jim began studying technical analysis. He found it fascinating. By studying chart patterns and other technical indicators, Jim realized the playing field could be leveled between the “professional insiders” in the markets, and traders/analysts like himself. Planes, Trains & Automobiles - A Study of Various Market Thrust Measures with Wayne Whaley, CTA

Wayne Whaley, CTA, joined Witter & Lester Inc, a Huntsville, Al. based Commodity Trading Advisor, in 1993 as a research analyst and became a partner in 1999. Wayne trades the company's assets but the majority of his efforts are in research activities to support trading. Mr. Whaley's forte is the implementation of his engineering background in the development of pattern recognition techniques, along with the ability to backtest multitudes of combinations of candidate market strategies. Prior to joining Witter & Lester, Wayne was employed from 1981-1993 as a system analyst for Teledyne Brown Engineering and Sparta Inc. Wayne honed his programming and analytical skills during the 80's by leading efforts to develop software that simulated the outcome of two sided nuclear force exchanges between the Soviet Union and the United States. Wayne's hobby during this time was the mathematical modeling of the stock market and he eventually joined Witter & Lester with the intention of turning his hobby into a career. Wayne received a Masters Degree in Operations Research in 1981 from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his first exposure to the mathematical modeling of probabilistic models. His education also focused on Optimization Theory, Time Series Analysis, Simulation Techniques and Game Theory. Wayne had no idea at the time where his applied mathematics background would lead him, but even as a student, he had particular fondness for his Engineering Economics classes. Wayne earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science from Jacksonville State University in 1979. Slides: http://www.mta.org/eweb/docs/pdfs/waynewhaley-070710.pdf

Trend Trading and Swing Trading - How to Effectively Alternate Between the Two with John Ehlers

John is chief scientist for MESA Analytics, Inc. He is an Electrical Engineer, receiving his BSEE and MSEE from the University of Missouri and did his doctoral work at The George Washington University, specializing in Fields & Waves and Information Theory. He has retired as a Senior Engineering Fellow from Raytheon. He has been a private trader since 1976, starting with fundamental analysis. With his engineering training he quickly gravitated to technical analysis of the market. He originally questioned what was magic about a 14 day RSI, or any other period. He concluded there was no unique answer and that one should adapt to current market conditions by using the measured cycle. John is a pioneer in introducing the MESA cycles-measuring algorithm and the use of digital signal processing in technical analysis. He discovered Maximum Entropy Spectrum Analysis (MESA) while attending an Information Theory seminar in 1978. He quickly reduced the theory to a computer program useful for trading. It was written originally for S-100 computers and he sold the source code to a few brave traders who pioneered the use of PCs for technical trading. He converted the program for the APPLE II computer to take advantage of its graphics capability and data availability via modems. The program has evolved with the increased capacity of modern computers. John has written extensively about quantitative algorithmic trading using advanced DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and has spoken internationally on the subject. His books include "MESA and Trading Market Cycles", "Rocket Science for Traders", and "Cybernetic Analysis for Stocks and Futures". His approach is unique. Any technique must first work on theoretical waveforms before testing against real-world data is attempted Slides: http://www.mta.org/eweb/docs/pdfs/johnehlers-063010.pdf

Auction Market Theory with Joseph Mertes

Joe Mertes began his career in building and developing a venture capital firm that specialized in the analysis, structure and acquisition of various business entities through the use of private equity. Capital formation, strategic business planning and control functions were key areas of responsibility. From venture capital he moved into working with troubled businesses through the restructure of balance sheets and capital formation. In each of these ventures he derived strategic plans based on an understanding of the development of various markets. In 1987 he concentrated on investing and trading techniques and money management. Over the last twenty years he has managed significant accounts for investors, consulted with notable funds and during the last three years has been responsible for the training and education of individual investors globally. He has emphasized and assisted traders, investors and institutions on the importance of establishing a business approach to the trading arena.
